For the shortest distance from the farm to the table try Field to Fork
Sheboygan is a blue-collared town that has always appreciated a good meal. Field and Fork has come forward to offer an innovated approach to eating by returning to the pioneer roots of the community. It’s a restaurant that is proud to offer the best food the local countryside can produce. The general philosophy of the restaurant is stated at their website “The shorter the distance between the field and the fork, the better." Field to Fork is a casual gathering spot in the center of town where people prepare meat and produce delivered straight from the farm. Some of the dishes are international and some are traditional Wisconsin fare, but all of it is very fresh.
Field to Fork is located on Eighth Street just south of the intersection with Pennsylvania Avenue. The building is a simple store front in a turn-of-the-century building that in many ways resembles a general store. The downstairs has a simple counter area with additional sitting upstairs. It is open for breakfast from 7 am to 11 am, and lunch 11 to 3, Monday through Saturday. The restaurant also features a Latin night on the second Friday night of every month. During Lent, a fish fry is occasionally held on Friday Evenings.
The menu is indicative of Field to Fork’s fresh food philosophy. Many of the menu selections are what you would expect on any Midwestern breakfast table. It’s what goes into the dishes that sets it apart. Along with listing dishes and ingredients on their menus, Field to Fork proudly names the farmers and artisans who provide much of their tasty fare. Breads and soups are made fresh at the restaurant. The breakfast selection is eclectic with biscuits and gravy alongside a tofu scrambler and a Costa Rican tico with locally-made chorizo. The lunch menu also has some unique selections including a rich dish of roasted mushrooms smothered in black truffle cheese. They also offer locally raised lamb burgers. For Latin night, they offer a truly impressive selection of Latin American dishes and a full bar. The coffee is free trade and the juices are organic. A quick review of offerings shows a number of vegetarian options. Ask your waiter or counter person about their gluten-free baked goods. The restaurant’s signature dish is none other than the unassuming cheese curd. But not just any cheese curd. Local white cheddar fried to perfection and served hot with honey mustard.
When you say that Field to Fork has something for everyone, you are not just talking about the menu. The establishment also includes a grocery that features locally grown produce in season and artisan products. It also has a bakery and an organic raw juice bar which can whip up about any concoction that you could imagine. Seating is arrange so you can watch the staff as they prepare the orders. The location makes it an attractive spot to come in for a cup of coffee and sit for a spell in the afternoon.
